On the eighth day of Giving Tuesday my Piedmont shared with me EIGHT new academic programs being launched.

In order to meet the rapidly changing world of educational opportunities, Carolina University is now offering minors in:

1. Sports Management; Undergrad

Whether you are merely an arm-chair sports enthusiast or an athlete seeking to translate your passion into a successful sports industry career, our BBA – Sports Management will give you the tools to become a leader in a rapidly evolving area. You will gain disciplinary knowledge in business areas such as management, leadership, strategy, entrepreneurship, marketing, analytics, and law that are relevant to the world of sports. Our program is taught by experts with a solid understanding of both theoretical knowledge and real-world applications. It is extremely flexible – all our courses are offered both on campus and online.

Students completing the minor in Sports Management will be prepared for a number of career possibilities in a variety of organizations, including professional sports teams, college athletic departments, sports media and marketing firms, merchandising and promotions, leisure and recreational services, and more.

The main objective, for each student in study, is to combine the “hands on” experience of an internship in the field with classroom rigor and research highlighted by guest lecturers. This integrated approach combines principles and practice leading to a full and broad-based educational experience leading to a possible career in sports administration and management.

2. Public Health; Undergrad

The minor/concentration in public health is designed for students who are interested in interventions aimed at improving health outcomes for society at large. The field will prepare students with disciplinary knowledge about the socio-economic, cultural, racial, and policy aspects of public health.

They will gain an understanding of research methods, analysis of health policy, conducting community needs assessments, epidemiology, statistics, occupational and environmental sciences, health behavior, advocacy, and communication.

Graduates may work as health and safety engineers, environmental officers, health and safety experts, policy advocates, government workers, etc.

3. Information Systems; Undergrad

The concentration in Information Systems can be completed as part of the BA Interdisciplinary Studies or the Bachelor of Business Administration. It equips students with the competencies for success in a rapidly growing field. IS managers plan, coordinate, and execute IT-related goals in an organization.

As the use of web-based systems, Big Data, and machine learning follow an ever-expanding trajectory, professionals in this area are central to an organizations success and very survival. They are expected to implement cyber security plans, deliver a competitive edge by leveraging new technology, negotiate with vendors, and recruit key personnel. At the apex of the chain, chief information officers (CIOs) develop and implement IT strategy for the whole enterprise.

4. MBA in Marketing

Marketing is a critical function in any business enterprise. Effective marketing management is essential to maintain and expand the share of the market as competition grows in a globalized market for goods and services – both domestic and international. As digital penetration increases and consumption decisions are driven primarily by internet activity, enterprises have to evolve new strategies and tools to gain market share. Consumers are faced with an array of purchasing choices and successful businesses manage to become the preferred choice by molding and matching customer preferences. Businesses are having to invest in competent personnel possessing digital and other skills to compete more effectively.

5. MBA in Business Analytics

Modern enterprises work with millions of pieces of data – about past and current customers, prospects, suppliers, inventories, operations, and internal processes. They utilize this data to make better decisions – about retaining existing customers and generating new ones, about improving the sourcing of their commodities and goods, locating their personnel, managing inventory to meet actual market demands, and about making their operations more efficient to reduce costs. The discipline of business analytics enables companies to translate data into intelligence and drive decisions – for example, segmenting customers by age, demographics, interests may help to anticipate desired products and services and bring them to market before these customers even start thinking about purchasing them.

The program is designed to produce graduates for new and emerging careers within this market. Students will learn the fundamentals of marketing analytics, data science and management, business statistics, applied regression, data mining, forecasting and modeling, and business strategy.

6. MBA in Supply Chain Management

The Supply Chain Management concentration provides students with competencies related to the production, purchasing, warehousing, distribution, and forecasting of an organization’s products. The goals are their optimization to lower expenses, enhance profitability, and improve customer satisfaction and safety. Graduates will also acquire skills in managing logistics, complying with regulation, technology, strategy, and human resources. The concentration will develop disciplinary knowledge in supply chain management, information technology and logistics, strategic sourcing, sustainability, quality management, business intelligence, and operations strategy.

7. MBA in Sports Management

The MBA with concentration in Sports Management prepares graduates for leadership roles in a variety of organizations, including professional sports teams, college athletic departments, sports media and marketing firms, merchandising and promotions, leisure and recreational services, and more. Whether your passion is cricket and you are interested in leading a team in the Indian Premier League, or you love basketball and wish to work in the front office of an NBA team, the CU MBA will equip you with the skills needed for success in the sports management world.

8. MBA in Human Resources

Human Resources Management is becoming an even more critical function within organizations large and small. As workers are more aware of their rights, willing to use external avenues to ventilate issues, and organize around social causes, organizations are scrambling to keep up. At the same time, businesses face challenges in recruiting and retaining talented employees and developing the next line of leadership. Finally, newer forms of work, flexible employment arrangements, the rise of the gig economy, and the growing use of automation present unexpected challenges for organizations. Unsurprisingly, businesses are seeking skilled professionals to manage their people resources better and prepare for a challenging future.

The university is also studying the feasibility of soon offering degree programs in Nursing, Entrepreneurship, Health Administration and Communications.

Your gift today or on “GivingTuesday” will continue to help Carolina University to provide students with quality academic programs to meet the challenges of our world from a global Christian perspective.
